Keep a large barrel to catch rain water. Add a small amount of bleach to keep out mosquito larvae. Use this water to wash your car and water your garden.

I think this is a great idea, but I heard that someplace, the police were writing tickets to people for doing it because the rights to the run off rain water belonged to the farmers and they had to let it run down the drainage and into the storm drain system. Wow. Fight the man! Save rain water!
