I grew up taking showers this way - allot of water goes down the drain while waiting for it to get hot enough.  In addition to a water restricter shower head - and limiting time to 3-4 minutes, you can save even more by flushing the toilet with this extra water.

I used to do this and take the bucket all the way downstairs to water outside plants. One day I spilled a gallon of water down my stairs and that was the end of it. It never occurred to me to use it for flushing the toilet. Duh!
