The UK system of "Members of Parliament" is closer to a true democracy than the US. Each MP reps a small geographic area and has to have weekly "surgeries" where local folks can go and gripe about any issue directly - yes, one on one with the rep. In the US they need to make the reps more accountable and more in touch with the people of their district.
